Top Ten Weirdest Religions

Jul 6th, 2008 | By admin | Category: Religion

There are many different religions of the world.  From Christianity, to Muslim, to the Church Of Euthanasia.  And what all these…wait..The Church Of Euthanasia? Because there are SO many different religions in the world today, there is going to be a few, if not a lot, of weird religions out there.  In case your religion ends up on this list, remember, I am in no way picking on your religious beliefs.  Every religion could end up on this list if looked at rationally and reasonably. Besides, I know what it’s like to have your religion picked on. My friends laughed at me when I said I wanted to worship Google! So, without further ado, here are ten of the weirdest religions in no particular order.

1.   Pastafarianism
The Church Of The Flying Spaghetti Monster sounds like a joke, right?  Well, it’s not damn it!  You can check it out here.  They actually have a pretty big following and a nicely laid out website, pretty much all you need to start up a religion.  But seriously, it’s more of a satirical look at religion.  The founder says, “I don’t have a problem with religion. What I have a problem with is religion posing as science. Teach Creationism in school, fine, but don’t teach it in a science classroom. And don’t change the definition of science so that you can teach these things. That’s retarded.  Supernatural explanations are by definition not science, so why would you teach them in a science classroom?

2.   Scientology
This religion was created by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.  Former members, journalists, courts and the governing bodies of several countries have described the Church of Scientology as a cult and an unscrupulous commercial enterprise, accusing it of harassing its critics and abusing the trust of its members. Scientology officials argue that most of the negative press is motivated by interest groups and that most of the controversy is in the past.  It would take up way too much time to describe the beliefs of this religion, so if want you can Google it Scientology.  In ending, I’m just going to say this; L. Ron Hubbard was quoted on Readers Digest as saying,
“Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion”.

3.   The Church Of Euthanasia
The Church of Euthanasia (CoE) is a Dadaist organization started by Rev. Chris Korda in the Boston, Massachusetts area of the United States.  According to the church’s website, the one commandment is “Thou shall not procreate”. They further assert the four principle pillars: suicide, abortion, cannibalism (”strictly limited to consumption of the already dead”), and sodomy (”any sexual act not intended for procreation”). The church stresses population reduction by voluntary means only, though. So, murder, rape and involuntary sterilization are strictly forbidden by church doctrine.  You mean no rape or murder?!  I was sold up until I heard that!

4.   Creativity Movement
The Creativity Movement is a racialist, and White-supremacist organization that advocates a “White Religion” called Creativity.  The original founder Ben Klaasen committed suicide in 1973, so it was then led by Matthew F. Hale until his incarceration on January 8, 2003 for plotting with FBI informant Anthony Evola to murder a federal judge.  Who knows who leads them now, and who cares.

5.   Church of Maradona
This religion was created by fans of the retired Argentine football player Diego Maradona, who they believe to be the best player of all time.  Incredibly, this religion has 80,000 members from more than 60 countries around the world.  This would help explain why I had members of the Church of Favre knocking on my door yesterday.

6.   Aum Shinrikova
Aum Shinrikyo was a Japanese religious group created by Shoko Asahara.  It reportedly has 49,000 members worldwide.  On March 20th, 1995, Aum members released sarin in a coordinated attack on five trains in the Tokyo subway system, killing 12 commuters, seriously harming 54 and affecting 980 more. That’s just ridiculous!  What kind of religion condones killing?!  Oh, wait…

7.   The Body of Christ
This religion consists of a small authoritarian group that relies on “direct revelation” and not the Bible for its direction.  What does this translate too?  Well, the cult founder’s son, Jacques, died of malnutrition. He was not fed because they were waiting for a sign from God to feed him.  I think the Body Of Christ and The Church Of Euthanasia need to join forces!  Their member count would be a whopping ZERO in just a few short years!

8.   Raelism
Raëlism consists of the practitioners of a UFO religion founded by a former French sports-car journalist and test driver named Claude Vorilhon. Raëlians believe that Vorilhon, who is known by the movement as Raël, received special knowledge and instruction for mankind from the creators of life on Earth, human-like extraterrestrials called Elohim who were seen as “angels” or “gods” in the eyes of ancient people.  Need I say more…

9.   Heaven’s Gate
Heaven’s Gate was the name of an American UFO religion based in California and led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. The group’s end coincided with the appearance of Haley’s Comet in 1997. Applewhite convinced thirty-eight followers to kill themselves, which he claimed would allow their souls to board a spaceship that they believed was hiding behind the comet.  Hmm, makes sense.  Unfortunately, all the members are dead, so I don’t know where to sign up at.

10.    Branch Davidians
The Branch Davidians are a sect that originated from a schism in 1955 from the Davidian Seventh Day Adventists, themselves former members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church who were disfellowshipped during the 1930s.  You might recognize the name of one of the more prominent members: David Koresh.  Waco, Texas is still most famous for the stand off that took place at the Davidians ranch that ultimately ended the life of David koresh, five fellow Davidians and four ATF agents.  They hardly did anything wrong though.  I mean, where in the bible does it say Thou shall not keep huge stockpiles of weapons and murder ATF agents?
